2017: START THE NEW YEAR THE RIGHT WAY

January 03 2017

Driving to work last week, I heard a segment on the radio that revealed only 8% of people keep their New Year’s resolutions.  Only 8%! The segment went on to say the common habits those who keep their resolutions share. However, I don’t wish to share tips on how to stick to your New Year’s resolution. I’d like to share goal setting techniques for you to use throughout the new year for personal or professional goals.

1. Write Your Goals

Write down your goals and place them somewhere you will see them. This will make your goals more tangible and remind you to stay focused. At Kingsgate, our sales team has their five main motivators (the things that drive them) on their desk. This way, they are reminded every day why they’re working hard.

2. Be Specific and Realistic

Most New Year’s resolutions fall by the wayside because they are too broad, like the standard “lose weight” or “be more productive”. Blanket statements make resolutions more unattainable. To avoid this, clarify specific and attainable goals.

3. Set a Timeline

In addition to specifying your goals, it’s critical to set a timeline and define when you plan to achieve your goal. To set yourself up for success, narrate short term goals or benchmarks you can hit along the way. This will help you stay on track and plan ways to hit your long-term goals.

4. Reward Yourself

Make sure you reward yourself and celebrate reaching short and long term goals. This is a crucial step to staying on track, and it’ll make reaching your goals that much sweeter. Literally sweeter at Kingsgate – our sales team gets candy and applause for every sale they make.

5. Stay Motivated

This sounds like a no-brainer but staying motivated is easier said than done. To achieve your goals, you have to stay focused and understand you’ll have off-days and face failures. These don’t define your successes, pick yourself back up and concentrate on why you created the goal.

Happy New Year! Comment your goals for 2017 below.

All the Best,

Jeff Beckham
