A LOOK AT FALL FRIEGHT

Today, September 23rd is the official first day of Fall (even though it certainly doesn’t feel like fall in Ohio). The shift of the seasons allows us to refocus as I discussed in last year’s blog, but in logistics it’s peak season. Peak season starts as summer winds down in August and goes until October before the holiday season starts and throughout peak season, shipping is busier than ever.

Sales rise during peak season and, with more sales being made, the demand for keeping inventory up increases truck demand. Throughout the fall months, there’s a push to ship all the seasonal favorites like pumpkins, apples and Christmas trees as the winter months approach. As we move through both the remainder of peak season and into the holiday season, here are a few things to keep in mind:

ELD MANDATE DEADLINE

The Electronic Logging Devices (E-log or ELD) rule became a law in 2016, and in 2019 on the third anniversary, all trucks must have the new upgraded ELDs installed. Since 2016, AOBRDs have been allowed in place of the ELD but the transition to full ELD compliance is December 16th, 2019.

COLORADO CHAIN LAWS

If you have loads going through CO, a reminder of the Colorado Chain Laws that started September 1st and go through May 31st. Here’s a breakdown of the requirements.

SHIFTING SEASONS

With the transition of the months, there’s additional seasonal shifts that impact the environment truckers and carriers work in. It gets darker earlier and stays darker later in the day. The weather (eventually) will cool down and bring about snow, sleet and other diverse weather conditions that impact travel times.
