CAREER FAIR TIPS AND TRICKS

September 30 2019

Fall is finally here, which means school is back in session and we’re shifting into the new season. While fall brings peak season for our sales and operations team, it brings fall career fairs for our recruiting team. Over the past week, Kingsgate’s recruiters have had the chance to meet with Xavier University Muskies and University of Cincinnati Bearcats looking to find internships as well as post-grad career opportunities. We wanted to share the best practices and tips and tricks we saw from standout students:

DO RESEARCH

Work smarter and not harder – use the tools your career center curates for you! Typically, they will publish a list of organizations that are registered to attend the career fair in advance. Research the companies attending the career fair and have a few things written down about their business. Also, have a strategy for approaching employers, which leads me to my next point…

COME PREPARED

This element cannot be stressed enough. Before you meet with potential employers, make sure you come fully prepared with goals and ways to achieve said goals. Put together a short elevator speech about yourself that includes: a bit about who you are, your major, employment opportunities you’re looking for, etc. In addition, make sure you have enough resumes printed to give to employers, so they know more about your qualifications and how to contact you.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Something that can really make you stand out beyond sounding the part is looking the part. Make sure to put extra effort into piecing together a professional outfit and where your items are pressed, clean and presentable.

BE YOURSELF

This last tip, while extremely cliché, is certainly crucial. This is your first interaction with a potential employer, so make sure it’s a genuine one! Not every position, job or company will be the perfect fit for every candidate and vice versa. At the end of a career fair, you should have a better understanding of what companies may fit your personality and be closer to protentional career opportunities!

We look forward to meeting more students eager to make their way in the professional world. For more opportunities at Kingsgate click here.

All the Best,
