Blog Takeover: Women in Logistics and Trucking

Rian Beckham here checking in for another blog takeover. I serve as the Director of Communications at Kingsgate. Throughout my past year working in logistics, I’ve learned quite a bit about the industry and the various components that are constantly changing in this line of business. Just a few short weeks ago Kingsgate was named the Dayton Business Journal’s Women-Owned Business of the Year for 2020 – an accomplishment we’re immensely proud of. Being in a male dominated industry but continually having our successes recognized is something our family is proud of. The role of women in logistics, supply chain and trucking is always expanding. According to this FreightWaves infographic, “women make up over 10% of over-the-road (OTR) truck drivers, a number predicted to continue rising.” Additionally, the growing influence of women in the industry could affect change in many positive ways including helping fix the driver shortage we’ve been seeing over the past decade.

We asked some of the wonderful Kingsgate ladies who work in our Operations and Carrier Sales Departments for their thoughts on being a woman in a male dominated industry and here’s what they said:

“Being a woman in a male dominated industry has taught me that the stereotypes around roles men and women have in the workplace are meant to be broken. Women are just as capable as our male counterparts in logistics, and while we are not as large of a presence in the field, we are mighty!” – Mel B.

“I am proud of the woman I am today, because I went through one hell of a time becoming her.” – Unknown. “This describes me so much! As a woman who has been in male dominated industries my entire adult life (starting in the Marine Corps until now), I have seen so many changes along the way, both in myself and in society. The struggles have been real having to work harder to prove myself in every possible way to earn the respect of men. Although it’s been hard at times, I’ve never lost sight of who I am and who I want to be. I feel that I’ve been able to prove my worth as a woman in the logistics industry and love working beside every one of my teammates.” – Melissa H.

Having worked in politics for eight years prior to Kingsgate, I am no stranger to what it’s like being a female in a male-dominated industry. While it’s been discouraging at times in the past, the hard work I’ve put forth to prove myself as a valued professional has made me a better person and employee. I’m proud to continue making strides that pave the way for future female leaders in all industries.
