TODAY STARTS THE CVSA ROADCHECK INSPECTION BLITZ

June 04 2018

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) roadcheck inspection kicks off today, June 5th– the 7th. The Roadchecks will focus on hours of service compliance. The inspections will look at driver operational abilities to ensure they meet requirements as well as reviewing vehicle mechanical qualifications.

This year the Electronic Logging Device (ELD or e-log) will be the largest change to the inspection. The ELDs will be checked to ensure they’re working properly. Professional drivers will be required to provide their operating credentials, hours-of-service records and checked on basic safety requirements.

Brake and hours-of-service violations are the most common problems discovered in the CVSA inspections. With the ELD mandate being well into effect the hope is HOS compliance is up but ELD checks will be of high-focus to ensure drivers and vehicles are up to code. In the official CVSA news release Capt. Christopher Turner, CVSA President, said “Although the electronic logging device (ELD) rule that went into effect on Dec. 18, 2017, does not change any of the underlying hours-of-service rules or exceptions, the ELD mandate placed a spotlight on hours-of-service compliance,” said Capt. Turner. “We thought this year would be a perfect opportunity to focus on the importance of the hours-of-service regulations.” (click for full news release)

Still, the bulk of the 37-step inspections will be on the general safety requirements of the vehicle equipment; ensuring brake systems are up to standards, freight and cargo are secured properly, vehicles lights work, windshield wipers are functioning, and etc.

For fellow brokers, keep in mind we have a market that’s already tight and this week will be increasingly tight with these scheduled inspections, so utilize your carrier relationships to ensure you’re moving freight despite these potential roadblocks.

All the Best,
