THE 2 MINUTE, 40 SECOND ECLIPSE AND ITS IMPACT ON TRUCKING

August 14 2017

One week from today, August 21st, there will be a solar eclipse for the first time in 99 years. The seemingly short two minutes and 40 seconds of the eclipse is completely altering freight schedules across the US. From Oregon to South Carolina, there’s an estimated 70 miles of major highway that will be in the total eclipse zone. While this seems like a minor instant in time, it’s impacting the transportation industry and how loads are being moved this week and next week.

A little less than 2/3 of the nation’s population live within a day’s drive of the total eclipse, as estimated by Federal Highway Association (FHWA). The crowding from people traveling to witness history will be a challenge for the logistics industry. The FHWA is working to minimize the potential (or risk) for accidents due to this high volume of traffic by sending out safety tips and are restricting the type of loads allowed on the roads.

Companies are rescheduling their loads to accommodate for this historic event. According to Transport Topics, the Tennessee Department of Transportation “has warned drivers not to stop on highways or on their shoulders to watch the eclipse.” Traffic impacts transportation industry on a daily basis and traffic of this volume will affect truck rates, on-time delivery and the overall flow of supply chain.

Our team has been preparing to accommodate for our customers’ needs during the eclipse and we’re aware of the challenges we will face. We’re taking the necessary steps to ensure loads are trucking on and delivered safety.

The Kingsgate Family is excited to experience history with the rest of the nation, and we encourage high precautions while driving and safe travels to all.

All the Best,

Jeff Beckham
